SRE is one of south Mississippi's first CFL bulb recycling centers (8-08)

LUCEDALE, MS – Singing River Electric Power Association has been partnering for years with members to find ways to use energy wisely. One of the best and least expensive efforts is to replace incandescent bulbs with more energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs).

"Though CFLs are no doubt the best widely available choice for efficient lighting, some customers may have concerns about disposing the bulbs due to their small amount of mercury," said member service representative Jeff Gray.

A very small amount of mercury is sealed within the glass tubing of every CFL. Mercury is the essential element that allows CFLs to be such an efficient light source.

Until now, finding a recycling center in south Mississippi has not been possible. Singing River Electric however, recently made all local offices official bulb recycling centers. Drop-off buckets are positioned at all offices to receive any unbroken CFL bulbs which will be sent off and recycled.
