How to spot a utility scam

Be aware of a growing phone scam targeting Singing River Electric members and utility customers across the nation. Phone scammers posing as your electric cooperative call and tell you that you are delinquent on your business or residential account. They demand payment and often threaten to turn off your power if you do not pay over the phone or by prepaid debit card. Often times, they can deceive you by having the caller ID display Singing River Electric. Don’t believe it. Stop scams and be prepared to report fraud.

Hang up the phone and check your account balance and payment history using your SmartHub app on any mobile device or call Singing River Electric using the number printed on your billing statement or on our website located at www.singingriver.com. After you call us, call the police and report the fraud. Whatever you do, do NOT pay over the phone or agree to purchase a prepaid debit card and meet anyone, anywhere, even if immediate payment is demanded to avoid disconnection.

Stay smart. Protect your money and your account information. And stop scams by being informed.
