Energizing Economic Development

Singing River Electric is committed to economic development as an important way of improving the communities we serve. We support our local economies and work to create new jobs in two ways: building infrastructure necessary to reliably support our business and industry needs both today and tomorrow, and working aggressively to match local economic development projects with U.S. Department of Agriculture rural development loans and grants.

Singing River Electric employees recently conducted the annual review of our Emergency Preparedness Plan as hurricane season opened on June 1. Employees walked through the plan phases, starting with actions to take when a storm enters the gulf until linemen have all power outages restored. This plan is reviewed and updated annually and has guided SRE through countless hurricanes, thunderstorms, and tornadoes. All departments are well-trained in their roles to assist with outage restoration.

Just as we prepare for whatever weather may come our way, we encourage our members to do the same. Visit singingriver.com/storm-center for safety tips, the 5 Steps of Power Restoration, and ways to prepare your family and home for storms.

From June 1 to November 30, our area faces an increased risk of severe storms and hurricanes. It is never too early to start preparing your home and family for potential storms, so we’ve put together a few tips to help:
- Stock your emergency kit:
o Water – at least one gallon per person per day for at least 3 days
o Non-perishable food for each person for at least 3 days. (Don’t forget the manual can opener!)
o Battery-powered radio, flashlights, and batteries
o First aid kit and prescriptions
o Important documents in waterproof containers
- Create your safety plan with designated meeting locations, emergency contacts, and evacuation routes
- Prepare your home by trimming trees and shrubs to remove weak branches, clearing gutters, downspouts, and drains, and considering how to secure outdoor furniture.
- Prepare your generator by having it inspected by a licensed electrician and test it often per your manufacturer’s instructions. NEVER connect a portable generator to your home’s electrical meter, as it can backfeed onto power lines and injure our linemen. Always use a transfer switch and plug your appliances and devices directly into the generator with heavy-duty extension cords.
