My Membership

Power in Membership

You are a member of one of the fastest growing electric cooperatives in the state and nation. Singing River Electric is the 49th largest out of 809 electric distribution co-ops nationwide and is one of more than 673 Touchstone Energy cooperatives in the United States.

With membership comes benefits, including a vote and a say in how this cooperative is run. Our members vote to elect from their neighbors who lead the cooperative. These members serve, represent neighbors, and have a say in monthly business decisions. Another member benefit is capital credits. Singing River Electric uses rate revenue to operate, make loan payments and electrical system improvements. Any remaining revenue is allocated and returned to the members in the form of capital credits.

  • We're Local, Like You

Electric co-ops are locally owned and operated by the very members they serve, which means the co-op is always looking out for you with a focus on member needs and local priorities. Member-ownership also guarantees every member has a voice in co-op business decisions. How the co-op is run is up to you.

  • We Share More Than Electricity

We share the same principles. That’s because electric co-ops are located in the communities they power and work hard to improve quality of life for all. We don't just work here, we live here.

  • We're Not For Profit

Members know they can trust their electric co-op, because it was created to deliver on the promise of providing safe, reliable and affordable electricity to members – not money for shareholders. Rate revenue is used to operate and make payments on loans. Remaining revenue is allocated to members in the form of capital credits.

  • We're About Our Communities

Community-friendly values mixed with the cooperative business model is what makes electric co-ops stronger and sets us apart from traditional, investor-owned power companies.

Capital Credits

I'm a member!

  • Singing River Electric's rate revenue is used to operate, make payments on loans and make improvements to the electrical system. Any remaining revenue is allocated to the members in the form of capital credits.
  • When you signed up for electrical service from the cooperative, you became a member. Each member is allocated capital credits based on their purchases from the cooperative in a calendar year.
  • Each year the board of directors decides whether to retire capital credits. There may be years when the cooperative is not able to distribute capital credits because of certain economic conditions and other factors such as major storm damage.
  • Capital credits are returned each year in December thru March either by check mailed to members, or in the form of a credit on the electric bill.
  • Singing River Electric retired capital credits to members in 2024 for the year 1998. Cooperative Energy, our generation partner, retired capital credits in 2024 to SRE members for the year 1994.
  • Capital credits less than $300 were credited to active SRE member December bills.
  • Capital credits greater than $300 were mailed as checks to SRE active members.
  • If capital credits were due to you and your account is still active, there was no need for action. You will automatically receive either a bill credit or a check this December 2024, depending on the credit amount.
  • Members who no longer have an active account may request capital credits between the first of October and the last business day in December. Documentation can be downloaded from this site (see links below) and must be returned to Singing River Electric's Lucedale office by the close of business on the last business day in December.
  • If you are applying for capital credits for yourself, and the account is inactive, you need to fill out a "Request for Capital Credits" form.
  • If you are applying for capital credits on behalf of a deceased relative, complete and return the "Request for Capital Credits" form and the "Capital Credit Application Affidavit."

  • Capital credits are maintained on record and can still be returned to a member when those credits are retired by the local board of directors. Members who move away may download paperwork from singingriver.com to request capital credits if they were members during the years being retired.
  • Yes. Surviving family members may download paperwork from singingriver.com to request capital credits for a deceased relative.

At this time, there is not a way for SRE to donate your capital credits on your behalf.
